| I started by pinning the body. I left the wings and the head
separate. Even though I did not assemble them at this time I pined them
as well. I used epoxy to mask the seems. I curved the main horns outward.
Then I lengthened the horns on the side of it’s head. Finally I added a
ridge on it’s forehead.
I had to build a custom holder for the body so I could paint it without touching the paint. I base coated the dragon with three different shades of blue. The hands, feet and part of the head were painted with a very light, almost white blue. The inside of the wings, and most of the main body were painted with a medium blue. The back of the wings, the wing supports, the neck and parts of the limbs were painted with a dark blue. I base coted the ridges and plates with a light red. I added the light red to the wing plates as well. I painted the horns and claws with an ivory. I coated the inside of the mouth with a bright pink. I also used the pink in the eye sockets and nostrils. I painted the teeth with a light gray. Then I used a plum for the dragon’s tung. The chest was coated by a leather colored paint. The last was the rock formations, I used a light orangish brown. The base coat was completed. Once this was completely dry, I washed each Feature with a wash that was 3 shades darker then the base coat. The only part that was not washed was the pink. The horns and claws were washed with a yellow brown. This was graduated darker toward the base. Each feature except the pink ones were dry brushed highlighted with three to five graduating shades. I started with the original base coat and stepped by one shade each time. The horns and claws were done heavier toward the tips. The eyes were last. I coated the eye sockets black. But let a small
amount of the pink show through around the edges. I used a deep green with
a light green over it as the pupils. It took me three tries to get the
eyes right. (I hate eyes)
I assembled the wings and head and matched the paint. Just a note, on 90% of the base coat and 50% of the highlights I used
Old Lady Craft Paints. it took about 80 hours to complete.
