Myalgic encephalomyelitis (M.E.) is known in the US as Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome. CDC conservatively estimates that CFS affects at least 400,000 to several million adults in the United States. More accurate numbers are now coming to light. Symptoms
include, but are not limited to: Self-reported impairment in short-term memory, or concentration, severe enough to cause substantial reduction in previous levels of occupational, educational, social or personal activities. Sore throat, tender cervical or axillary lymph nodes, muscle pain, multiple-joint pain without joint swelling or redness, headaches (new type, pattern or severity), non-refreshing sleep and post-exertion malaise lasting more than 24 hours.

Within these parameters, an individual with CFS can also exhibit muscle weakness, sleep disturbances, visual difficulties (trouble focusing or photosensitivity), lightheadedness, increased fatigue with prolonged standing, neurological cognitive problems like difficulty comprehending and processing information, fainting, mental processing problems, secondary depression, irritability and anxiety.
After reading this brochure, you may suspect you have Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. If so, please find a doctor that is familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. Tests will have to be performed, to exclude the other possibilities that FM and CFS mimic, before a conclusive diagnosis can be made. Often it is a time-consuming and frustrating process. Fortunately, increased awareness and medical advances are making a diagnosis easier to obtain.
